I was sitting at a local bar today, listening to the banter of patrons about politics, relationship issues, or the new 49ers coach. I was waiting for one friend to meet me, while texting Steve (the site's co-founder) about the game 3 upset turned blowout. There are so many story lines to follow, Kevin Love's absence from the lineup leading to the win, LeBron's insane alley-oop finish, any of of the other random things that get discussed after the Warriors' win that people get excited about. But tonight, as I sat in the bar, I heard people talking about how Curry was failing the Warriors. I saw a headline on the worldwide leader in sports asserting the same thing. My facebook feed was littered with questions about whether a team that is up 2-1 just lost the series. One thought crossed my mind... Y'all need to calm down.
First off, the man still scored 19 points on 6-13 shooting. He still shot 3-9 from behind the arc. He did not have the classic Curry-dominant performance that everyone has come to expect, but understand this: The Warriors are a machine of a team. Curry's line from game 2 was almost identical (7-11/4-8/18pts) but his team won by 30 points and nobody asked if we was the weak link. The Warriors have such a system that when you substitute Livingston in for Curry, their point differential drops by a measly three tenths of a point! When your MVP is hurt with a MCL sprain and you are still able to outscore other teams by 17.6 points with the second string point guard, it is NOT his fault if you lose by 30 in game 3. In fact, I would say if anything, Draymond Green has been exposed more than anyone else this series – hell, this postseason. The reason the Thunder went to game 7 was that Green went cold first and then Thompson and Curry followed. For those who did not watch the series, go back and see what he did to their rhythm. The biggest difference between games 2 and 3 of the finals? Draymond Green was no longer guarded by a combination of Kevin Love/Timofey Mozgov. He went from scoring 16 and 28 points, being a +17 and +20 in games 1 and 2 to 6 points and a -15 in game 3, yet we aren't pointing fingers at him wondering why he is failing his team.
